Fort Build
Each fall, my dorm comes together to build a huge wooden fort in our courtyard. I helped with the design and CAD effort in SolidWorks for this upcoming build, contributing to the structural framing across three floors from joists and cross-bracing to safety railings.
3D Printing
During my UROP, I needed a better way to manage loose screws, zip ties, and miscellaneous tools. So I opened up OnShape, sketched out an idea, and printed a custom desk organizer that now lives permanently next to my robot.
I also wanted a headphone stand on my desk, and I thought it would be cool if I could change the top design when I was bored. So I made multiple interchangeable tops including a burning man and krotus which are both symbols from my living group.
Speaking of my living group, I 3D printed an optical illusion that says 'Florey' on one side and 'Krotus' on the other side. Florey is the name of my living group, and Krotus is my group's mascot.
Graphic Design
For awhile now, I have been designing logos and posters using Adobe Illustrator as a hobby. These are various designs that I made for some MIT student groups.
Painting
Painting and other methods of art do not come naturally to me, but I still try to be creative when I can and have fun with it. I recently have been very into clothing alterations, so the first picture shows a jean jacket that I painted the subway surfers logo on the back. To aid my painting efforts, I lasercut a cardboard stencil.
The second picture is another painting that I did on the back of a shirt using an acrylic stencil.
The third picture is a mural that I made of a cat with some groovy lines. I am really into the funky style of art which I tried to recreate. The paint was more watery than expected, which is why it started dripping but I decided to embrace that accident and leave the drips to aid the surreal aesthetic.
Reflection
I love doing small projects when I can to embrace my creativity and remind myself all the different ways that engineering can be fun and stress-free.
